In partnership with Tupy, the project should serve 1,100 students from 8 public schools in 2022<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n

SOS Manguezais, an environmental research and education project held in Joinville will directly impact 1,100 students from 8 public schools this year. The objective is to bring children closer to nature, forming disseminators and citizens that are more aware of environmental issues, especially those related to mangrove forests.<\/p>\n

To that end, project-related professionals use textbooks, activities, games and other initiatives to teach elementary school students (third-graders or higher) in an informative and playful way about fauna and flora and the environmental impacts on mangrove ecosystems. The students also engage in practical activities in the surroundings of schools, closely observing the local environment. They also visit the Caieira Natural Park, which turns into a pedagogic space to learn about the environment.<\/p>\n

This month, Tupy renewed its partnership with SOS Manguezais, as it understands how relevant the project is. Besides this initiative, Tupy preserves over 5 thousand hectares of forests that are close to its headquarters, generating an inventory of 1.5 million tons of CO2. Part of this area consists of mangrove forests, i.e. coastal ecosystems of transition between the terrestrial and marine environment. They are considered a marine habitat that can also capture carbon. The Babitonga Bay is home to an 82-kilometer mangrove forest, representing nearly 80% of the mangroves of the Santa Catarina state, according to the Cubat\u00e3o Cachoeira Joinville Committee.<\/p>\n

SOS Manguezais <\/strong><\/p>\n

The SOS Manguezais Project has been continuously carried out by the Comar Institute since 2011 and has been supported by Tupy since 2019. Altogether, the project has already served 32 schools in Joinville\/SC, with the direct participation of over 12 thousand students. Since 2020, the project has been maintaining the Troca Verde platform with remote activities and virtual meetings with the Comar Institute for public schools where in-person activities cannot be held.<\/p>\n

The Mutir\u00e3o de Limpeza dos Manguezais<\/em> (Mangrove Cleaning Task Force) Project is another initiative supported by volunteers. A total of 257 kilos of waste has already been collected and sent for recycling or appropriate disposal.<\/p>\n
